Mens hair loss
Androgenic Alopecia (also known as male pattern baldness) is the most common cause of hair loss in men.
In classic pattern baldness, hair is lost in a pattern beginning above both temples. Hair also thins at the crown of the head. Often a rim of hair around the sides and rear of the head is all that’s left.
A variety of genetic and possibly environmental factors play a role in androgenic alopecia.
Researchers have determined that pattern hair loss is related to hormones called androgens, particularly an androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Male pattern baldness is caused by a genetic sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT, which causes them to shrink or ‘miniaturise’. This shortens their lifespan and prevents them from producing hair normally.
There are also theories that scalp tightness and resulting baldness may be a result of co-contraction of small muscles in the scalp, leading to increased tension.
Men with androgenic alopecia typically have higher levels of 5-alpha-reductase, lower levels of total testosterone, higher levels of unbound/free testosterone, and higher levels of total free androgens including DHT. 5-alpha-reductase is responsible for converting free testosterone into DHT.
The diagnosis of androgenic alopecia can be usually established based on clinical presentation in men. In most cases androgenic alopecia can be confirmed by a microscopic scalp analysis.
Regrowth of lost hair in the early stages of male pattern baldness can be fully restored with non-invasive treatments such as laser. However, bald spots where hair follicles have closed down and been destroyed cannot be restored with non-invasive treatments and require a hair transplant to achieve coverage.
More than 60% of all men suffer a hair loss condition within their lifetime.
Hair loss in men can lead to low self-esteem, embarrassment and even depression – especially if you feel there’s no hope.
But there is help available, and you are definitely not alone. At Innovative Hair Loss Solutions we don’t use surgery or any ‘gimmicks’, hair pieces or wigs. We specialise in hair re-growth treatments that are safe, non-invasive and pain-free.
Our programs are tailored to your specific hair regrowth needs so that you can regrow your own hair – either in one of our studios, or in the comfort of your own home.
“My colleagues laughed when I bent to pick up a pen.”
But they don’t laugh anymore. I didn’t really notice that my hair was thinning because most of the problem was on the crown of my head.
“One day at work, I bent down to pick up a pen and a couple of mates started whooping and pointing. They told me I was going bald on top.”
After closer examination I discovered that my hair was thinning on top and around both temples. Having already undertaken a few modelling assignments and meeting several prospective girlfriends, I decided to seek help in order to restore my confidence.
“I thought that some women perhaps didn’t find me so attractive, but that might’ve been a psychological thing. I just wanted a full head of hair again.”
I went to the Innovative Hair Loss Solutions salon in Subiaco and, after my initial scalp assessment, began a course of treatment that lasted twelve weeks.
“It was just amazing. There were results after just a couple of months and I decided to buy one of the hand-held laser brushes which I now use at home twice a week along with topical treatments. There’s been a massive difference. This treatment really works for me.”
So, will it be more modelling, a dream girl or both? One thing’s for sure, the next time I drop my pen, the office will remain silent.
